Washer Won't Spin
Likely causes
- ✓Worn or broken drive belt
- ✓Failing lid or door lock switch
- ✓Unbalanced load triggering a safety stop
- ✓Worn motor coupling (top-load washers)
- ✓Failing drive motor or motor control board
If a washer fills and agitates but clothes come out soaking wet, the spin cycle isn’t engaging. On many top-load models, this points to a worn motor coupling — a small, inexpensive part designed to fail before the motor does, so this is often a cheaper fix than it sounds.
A broken or slipping drive belt is the next most common cause across both top-load and front-load washers. If the washer stops before it even attempts to spin, a failing lid or door lock switch is often to blame, since most washers won’t spin unless the switch confirms the door is secured.
