Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Turning

Likely causes

  • Jammed impeller from food debris or a foreign object
  • Tripped internal reset button
  • Worn or seized motor bearings
  • Stuck flywheel needing manual release with an Allen wrench
  • Failed motor capacitor

A humming disposal that won’t spin almost always means the motor is receiving power but something is physically blocking the impeller. In many cases this can be cleared by manually rotating the flywheel from underneath with an Allen wrench and pressing the reset button — a fix our technicians can often complete in minutes.

If the jam has been running for a while, the motor bearings or capacitor may have taken damage, in which case the unit needs a replacement rather than a jam clear. We check for a simple jam first before recommending a full unit replacement.
